This London travel guide covers everything for a first visit. London packs royal palaces, world-class free museums, markets and parks into one easy-to-navigate city, and it has one of the best public transport networks in the world. Direct flights from Islamabad take just under nine hours, and there are many one-stop options from Lahore and Karachi.

The best weather is from May to September, with long days around 18–24 °C, but the city is busy and hotels cost more. Spring and autumn are quieter and cheaper. The weather changes quickly in every season, so pack a light rain jacket.

Most long-haul flights land at Heathrow (LHR), about 25 km west of the centre. Gatwick (LGW) in the south also handles many routes, while Stansted, Luton and London City serve mostly short-haul flights. Allow 60–90 minutes from landing to your hotel.

Pakistani passport holders need a UK visitor visa, applied for online well before travel. Many visa-free visitors, including EU and German citizens, now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), a quick online permission costing about £16. Always check the official UK government website before you fly.

Food to try in London

Try the classics: fish and chips, a full English breakfast, a Sunday roast and afternoon tea with scones. London is also one of Europe's best cities for halal food. Edgware Road is known for Lebanese and Arab restaurants, Whitechapel and Brick Lane for curries, and Southall in west London for Pakistani and Punjabi cooking; many burger and chicken shops are halal too — look for a certificate in the window.

Expect about £8–15 for a casual meal or street food, £20–35 for a sit-down dinner and more in central restaurants. Supermarket meal deals around £4–5 make a cheap lunch. Tipping 10–12.5% is normal when service is not already added to the bill.

Getting around: public and private transport

The Underground (the Tube), the Elizabeth line, Overground trains and buses reach almost everywhere. Pay with contactless or Oyster: a Tube journey in central zones costs about £2.80–3.50 and a daily cap of roughly £9 applies for zones 1–2, while every bus trip costs £1.75 with free transfers within an hour. Avoid the busiest rush hours (about 7.30–9.30 and 17.00–19.00) if you can.

Black cabs are iconic but expensive; ride-hailing apps are cheaper for groups and late nights. Hire bikes are dotted around the centre, and walking between nearby sights is often faster than the Tube. Driving is not recommended: there are congestion and emission charges, and parking is scarce.

💡 For most visitors the Tube and buses are best by day; use a taxi or app late at night or with heavy luggage.

Safety and local tips

London is generally safe, but pickpockets and phone snatchers work busy areas such as Oxford Street, Leicester Square and Tube platforms. Keep your phone away from the kerb, bags zipped and valuables out of sight, and avoid unlicensed minicabs touting on the street.

Call 999 (or 112) in an emergency and 111 for non-urgent medical advice. Plugs are type G (230 V), cards are accepted almost everywhere — even for small amounts — and tap water is safe to drink. Stand on the right on escalators, and remember traffic drives on the left.

Where to stay in London

Best time to visit London

May to September is the mildest time to visit London, with long days and temperatures around 18–24 °C — perfect for parks and river walks. Late spring and early autumn are a little quieter than the peak of July and August.

Winter (November–February) is cold and damp at about 5–9 °C, but the city glows with Christmas lights and markets, and January sales bring the best shopping prices. Pack an umbrella in every season.
