This Los Angeles travel guide covers everything for a first visit. LA is not one centre but many neighbourhoods spread between the mountains and the Pacific: Hollywood’s film history, beach towns like Santa Monica and Venice, world-class free museums and food from every corner of the world.
LA has sunshine most of the year. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant; summer is hot inland, and “June gloom” can bring grey mornings at the coast. Pakistani passport holders need a US visa; flights from Pakistan connect once in the Gulf, Istanbul or Asia.
Getting into Los Angeles from LAX
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is on the coast, about 25 km south-west of downtown and 30 km from Hollywood. Traffic decides your journey time more than distance does.
Taxis and rideshare cars pick up at the LAX-it area, reached by a free shuttle from each terminal. A TAP card or the TAP app pays for Metro trains and buses.

Getting around Los Angeles
Most visitors hire a car, but Metro rail now links downtown, Hollywood, Universal City, Pasadena, Long Beach and Santa Monica; a ride costs about $1.75. Rideshare apps fill the gaps and are often easier than parking.
If you drive, expect heavy traffic and paid parking at most attractions. Allow extra time and avoid rush hours.
Safety and local tips
Tourist areas are generally safe. Never leave bags visible in a parked car, as break-ins are common, and avoid empty streets downtown at night. Homelessness is visible in parts of the city; it rarely affects visitors, but stay aware.
The sun is strong all year — wear sunscreen. Tipping of 18–20% in restaurants is expected, and sales tax (around 9.5%) is added at the till. In summer and autumn, check for wildfire warnings before hiking.
