This Madinah travel guide is written for pilgrims combining Madinah with Umrah. Madinah, the City of the Prophet ﷺ, is greener and calmer than Makkah, and most visitors spend three to four nights here praying at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and visiting the historic sites of early Islam. The area around the Prophet's Mosque is reserved for Muslims.

October to March is the most comfortable time, with warm days and cool evenings — winter nights can drop to 10–15 °C, so pack a light jacket. Summers are very hot, often above 40 °C, and Ramadan is the busiest season.

Getting to Madinah

Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) is about 20 km from the Haram — 20–30 minutes by road. Direct flights from Karachi take around four and a half hours; from Lahore and Islamabad most itineraries connect in Jeddah, Riyadh or a Gulf hub. Many pilgrims instead travel from Makkah on the Haramain high-speed train, which takes about 2 hours 15 minutes.

Entry follows the same rules as for Umrah: an Umrah visa arranged through an authorised agent for Pakistani passport holders, or the Saudi tourist e-visa for eligible nationalities such as German citizens outside the Hajj season. Visits to the Rawdah need a time slot booked in the official Saudi app — book as soon as you know your dates.

Madinah is famous for its dates — try Ajwa, Sukkari and Safawi at the dates market or one of the shops near the Haram. Arabic breakfasts of ful, foul bread and tea are cheap and filling, and kabsa and mandi rice dishes are served everywhere. Zamzam water is available free inside the mosque.

The streets around the Haram have many Pakistani, Indian, Turkish and Arabic restaurants as well as hotel buffets and food courts. A simple meal costs about SAR 15–35 and a hotel buffet SAR 70–180. Everything is halal, and restaurants pause briefly at prayer times.

Getting around Madinah

Most hotels in the central area are within walking distance of the mosque. For ziyarat, the simplest option is a half-day tour by car or bus arranged through your hotel or Umrah agent, or a sightseeing bus that stops at Quba, Uhud and Qiblatayn. City buses connect the Haram with Quba and other districts for a few riyals.

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to find; use the app price or agree the fare before you go. For the journey back to Makkah or Jeddah, choose between the Haramain train (fastest and most comfortable), a private car or family van, or an Umrah coach.

💡 Visit Quba early on a Saturday morning, as the Prophet ﷺ used to — and go before the midday heat.

Safety and practical tips

Madinah is very safe and peaceful. Plan around the crowds: arrive early for Friday prayers, agree a meeting point with your family by gate number, and keep children's details in their pockets. Drink plenty of water in summer and dress modestly — women should wear an abaya or loose clothing and a headscarf in the mosque area.

The emergency number is 911. Plugs are type G (230 V), cards are widely accepted, and wheelchairs are available for elderly visitors inside the mosque. Photography is discouraged inside the mosque — keep your phone away and enjoy the moment.
