This Qinghai travel guide covers a first trip to one of China’s most spectacular provinces. Qinghai sits on the north-eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau: China’s largest lake, salt lakes that mirror the sky, golden rapeseed fields, Tibetan monasteries and grasslands with yaks and nomad tents.
June to September is the best time, with green grasslands and rapeseed in flower around Qinghai Lake in July. Winters are very cold. The capital Xining is at about 2,275 metres and most sights are above 3,000 metres, so plan for the altitude. Pakistani passport holders need a Chinese visa.
Getting to Qinghai and Xining
Xining Caojiabao Airport (XNN) has flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an and Ürümqi, and Xining station is on the high-speed rail network and the start of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway to Lhasa.
From Pakistan, the usual route is a flight to Ürümqi, Beijing or Chengdu and a domestic connection to Xining.
| Xining airport to the city | Time | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Airport bus | 45–60 min | about ¥20–25 |
| Taxi or DiDi | 35–45 min | ¥100–150 |

About 21 hoursFood in Qinghai
Qinghai is one of the easiest places in China for Muslim travellers: the Hui and Salar communities run countless halal restaurants. Try hand-pulled beef noodles, lamb skewers, hand-grabbed mutton, thick yoghurt and sweet milk tea. In Tibetan areas you will find yak meat, tsampa (roasted barley flour) and butter tea.
Look for the green “清真” (qīngzhēn, halal) sign above restaurant doors — it marks halal food all over China. The streets around the Dongguan Mosque in Xining are full of halal restaurants and night-market stalls.
Getting around Qinghai
Xining has buses and taxis (use the DiDi app). Long-distance buses and trains reach Qinghai Lake towns, but sights are far apart, so a tour or private car with driver is the easiest way to see the lake and Chaka in two or three days.
Install Alipay or WeChat Pay and link a foreign card before you travel — cash is accepted less and less. Many foreign apps and Google services are blocked in China, so use an eSIM with roaming or a suitable app setup.
Altitude, safety and local tips
Qinghai is safe, but altitude is the main risk. Rise gradually, drink plenty of water, avoid heavy exercise on the first day, and descend if you get a severe headache, breathlessness or confusion. People with heart or lung conditions should ask a doctor before travelling.
The sun is strong at altitude and nights are cold even in summer — bring layers, sunscreen and sunglasses. Dress modestly and walk clockwise around Tibetan temples and stupas. Remove shoes and keep quiet in mosques.
